Seeing a question on LinkedIn the other day made me think. The question had to do with "...have you gotten any business from your social networking on LinkedIn?" That made me wonder what others think "social networking" is and for.
Relationship building is all about networking and getting to know others. There are certainly degrees of knowing someone. Some people we know intimately and others not so much. Normally we prefer to hire people we know, work with people we know and buy from people we know. Even if it is knowing them a short time. Degrees!
LinkedIn is a great tool, just like websites. Some websites are more suited to sell a product or service. Most are for information and letting people get to know you.
Learn more about other people and you will learn more about yourself.

Hey Cleon,
I don't invest much in LinkedIn, but I do spend some time on Biznik, and I do feel that it has benefited my business. For me though, it hasn't been in people soliciting me for business.
We talk about networking and finding "power partners,"-- and that's one of the areas where online networking has a distinct advantage. The pool is much larger and it's much easier to sift through. It's also easier to gather information about people without engaging them, which makes a person more likely to act on their curiosity without having to fear being sold to.
In this type of environment, finding power partners becomes much easier, and it's easier for people to see why or why not *you* make a good partner. It's no substitute for face-to-face interaction, but it definitely is an enormous help in finding who might be good to talk with.
That's my two cents. See you Tuesday. :)
John
